Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Ingredients
  

For the Chocolate Cupcakes:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 5 tablespoons Dutch process cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder optional
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 egg at room temperature
  • 1 egg yolk at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sour cream at room temperature
  • ½ cup whole milk at room temperature

For the Sorting Hats:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 6 Oreos filling removed
  • 6 oz dark chocolate bars chopped
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese cold
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • Blue green, gold, and red gel food coloring
  • Sprinkles for decorating

Instructions
 

For the Chocolate Cupcakes:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a cupcake pan with 12 liners.
  • Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder in a small bowl.
  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, then mix in milk and sour cream.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until smooth. Divide batter into liners and bake for 17-19 minutes.
  • Let cupcakes cool completely.

For the Sorting Hats:

  • Make frosting by mixing butter, salt, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and heavy cream. Pipe onto Oreos in a swirling pattern, then freeze until solid.
  • Melt chocolate and coconut oil, then coat frozen Oreos. Let hats set.

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • Whip butter until fluffy, then mix in cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.

Assembling the Cupcakes:

  • Dye portions of frosting red, gold, blue, and green. Core cupcakes and fill with corresponding colors.
  • Pipe remaining frosting on top, add sprinkles, and place a Sorting Hat on each cupcake.
  • Enjoy revealing your Hogwarts house colors with each bite!
