Description

These crispy tofu tenders bring together a bright honey mustard coating and a crunchy baked crust for a simple plant-based meal that feels bold, cozy, and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 block firm tofu, pressed and drained well
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup mustard
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven first. Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) so it reaches the right temperature before the tofu goes in. A properly hot oven helps the coating brown and crisp instead of turning soft.
  2. Prep the tofu. Slice the pressed tofu into even strips, keeping them roughly the same size so they bake at the same rate. Thinner, uniform strips give you a better texture and make the tenders easier to handle.
  3. Make the honey mustard mixture. In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey and mustard until smooth and fully blended. Taste the mixture and adjust the balance if needed: add a little more honey for sweetness or a little more mustard for extra tang.
  4. Build the breadcrumb coating. In a separate bowl or shallow dish, stir together the breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well so the seasoning spreads evenly through the crumbs.
  5. Coat each tofu strip. Dip one tofu strip into the honey mustard mixture and turn it until all sides are covered. Let any excess drip off, then place the strip into the breadcrumb mixture. Press the crumbs gently onto the tofu so they cling well, then repeat with the remaining pieces.
  6. Arrange on a baking sheet. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the coated tofu strips on it in a single layer. Leave a little room between each piece so the hot air can move around them and help them crisp evenly.
  7. Bake the tenders. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Flip the tofu halfway through the baking time so both sides brown evenly and the coating gets crisp all over.
  8. Check for doneness. The tenders should look golden brown, feel firm around the edges, and smell deeply savory with a sweet mustard note. If needed, bake them a few minutes longer until the coating looks crisp and the tofu feels heated through.
  9. Rest before serving. Let the tenders sit for a couple of minutes after they come out of the oven. This helps the crust settle and makes the tenders easier to lift from the pan.
  10. Serve and enjoy. Plate the tofu tenders with your favorite dipping sauce, a fresh side salad, roasted vegetables, or fries. They taste best while still warm and crisp.

Notes

  • Use extra-firm tofu if available. It gives the best texture and makes the coating easier to manage.
  • Adjust the sauce to your taste. A little more honey makes it sweeter, while a little more mustard makes it punchier.
  • For a vegan version, swap the honey for maple syrup or agave.
  • Serve with extra dipping sauce for a more snackable, dippable finish.
